CHAPTER XV

No uneasiness plagues me in the night, and the lauvan network is unruffled the next morning when I check. This doesn’t calm me. Xenia is working on something, and I don’t know when she will strike next.

No help is coming from the elemental plane, but I can’t think of what else to do to aid our cause. I check on the elemental in Ben then head to the university. My mind is agitated, but I am determined to give my lectures as tranquilly as possible.

The students yawn and take notes as if nothing is wrong, and it’s only through great restraint that my worry doesn’t bubble through my façade of composure. Near the end of my second class, I feel the faintest tingling in my strands that warns of approaching trouble.

“Look at the syllabus for your readings for next time,” I call out as I shove papers into my satchel and race up the aisle. “Class dismissed.”

The students stare at me with baffled expressions, but I don’t have time to say more. Finally, the tense silence in the lauvan is broken. Another elemental is coming through, and I mean to catch this one as well. Then, it’s time to get answers—the hard way, if necessary.

With a quick plunge of my hand into earth strands that swirl around my feet outside, I establish the position of the disturbance. It’s a cluster of brown strands this time, small but growing fast. It’s only a few blocks away, so I retreat from the threads and sprint to my van. It will be as quick to drive as to fly, and I might need my van to transport the elemental I capture. While I run, I text the others.

Big one. Now. Northeast corner of Pacific Spirit Park.

Only Anna and Minnie reply, but they are both close and available. I race out of my parking spot, tires squealing, and gun it down the boulevard.

The sense of uneasiness is strong, even without being directly connected to the network. My stomach turns, half with the sensation and half with fear. What is happening this time? What is Xenia’s plan?

I screech to a halt a half-block away from where I felt the disturbance. Anna and Minnie, already present, run toward me with looks of confusion and concern.

“I don’t see anything yet,” Anna pants. “Is this the spot?”

“Yes.” I scan the road. “It’s earth-related, but I don’t know how it will manifest.”

Cars zip past us on the busy road. My eyes travel up and down, searching for a sign.

“I’m going in,” I say. “Watch yourselves.”

Before Minnie can open her mouth to protest, I dip my hand into the earth strands at my feet. The disturbance is close and throbs with menace. It’s huge, and more strands cling to its twisting surface, looking like a large ball of malevolent yarn. It’s as big as the other disturbances were at their peaks, so I pull out of the lauvan.

“Anything?” I ask. Minnie shakes her head, then she grabs my arm.

I feel it too—a jolt of the Earth that buckles my knees.
